I’m going to take it back a bit for you. On Episode 88 of the Stern Truth, my guest was Carmen Leibel. She and I both made some significant changes in our careers on the same day, June 30th, 2023. We dubbed it “Leap of Faith Day.” I focused on my coaching and Carmen on her public speaking workshops.
Both of us took a huge leap of faith that day and stepped way outside of our comfort zones. It wasn’t easy and it wasn’t comfortable. We both knew it was time.
So HOW do you know it’s time to step outside of that easy, breezy comfort zone? I’ll tell you about my journey in this blog and when it’s the right time to push yourself.
In The Zone
Last year, I made a decision for myself that I would put myself out there more. I wasn’t sure what that would look like exactly, but public speaking was a top objective for me.
Now, even though I have my podcast, The Stern Truth, I wanted to really be outside of the camera, in front of people. A live audience is such a different experience than hosting or being a podcast guest (don’t get me wrong – all are great!).
I knew I had to be comfortable with being uncomfortable. I had to push myself to be okay with feeling awkward and grab opportunities when they came up, which they did! As that happened, I became comfortable in the uncomfortable.
I’m glad I did because I mapped out my vision of where I wanted to go, what I wanted to do, and I went for it. Great opportunities came out of stepping outside of my normal.
The Three-Year Plan
I don’t actually recommend a 10-year planning vision for anyone. Too much can change within 10 years – your mind, your life, technology, the world around you. You never know what can come up.
What I would suggest is to map out a 3-year plan. Case in point, yet another opportunity that presented itself to me, almost to the day of June 30th, one that I gladly snapped up.
If I had a 10-year plan and rigidly stuck to that, I’m almost certain I wouldn’t have grown this year. I would never have gone for this opportunity with this organization, let alone heard about it at all.
A three-year plan is made for that flexibility and that room to grow and change.
When to Commit to a Change
That commitment to change is what I call an ONtrepreneur Method shift, going from the “comfortable” to the “uncomfortable.” My friends, let me tell you, there is no better time than now.
A few questions that you might want to ask yourself before pushing yourself forward:
- What’s holding you back?
- What does stepping outside of your comfort zone look like for you?
- Do you have a support system to help you through?
- Can you break it down into smaller steps?
- Is this what I really want?
Change doesn’t have to be something as big as expanding your business. Maybe you’re hiring your first employee or taking a new training program. Maybe you want to invest more in your marketing. Or you might want to do something non-business related.
Go for it and go for it now. Be bold. Be intentional. Put yourself out there more and get outside of your comfort zone.
